Think Like: Shigeru Ban

by Tra Publishing

Think Like Shigeru Ban
is the debut title in Tra Publishing’s innovative Think Like series, which inspires children and their families to learn about artists, the artistic process, and art for humanitarian and environmental good. Each illustrated book has a primary narrative about the artist and their work that is illustrated in the artist’s style; an insert booklet showing examples of the cause-related component of the artist’s practice; and a section to learn more about the artist, including an original interview, a timeline, and more.

Japanese architect Shigeru Ban is one of the most acclaimed architects in the world. He has designed many types of buildings in numerous countries, including museums, office buildings, cultural venues, and houses. In addition to high-profile projects, he regularly comes to the aid of disaster victims and refugees by designing temporary shelters that are typically made from inexpensive and recyclable paper tubes. He has created buildings such as a temporary school after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, shelters after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and a church—the Cardboard Cathedral—as a symbol of rebuilding in New Zealand after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.

"Even in disaster areas, as an architect I want to create beautiful buildings. I want to move people and to improve people's lives. If I did not feel this way, it would be impossible to create meaningful architecture and to make a contribution to society at the same time."—Shigeru Ban
